Job Description: 

Overview

This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC equipment including, but not limited to rooftop units, air handling units, direct fire Make Up Air Units, gas fired boilers, hydronic systems, heat pumps, chillers, VRF, VAV – air systems, VVT – air systems and a variety of building automation systems within City of Kitchener facilities. This position also assists in the design and development of HVAC equipment for new buildings, renovation and re-habilitation HVAC projects.
 

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and perform regular preventative/planned maintenance on a variety of HVAC equipment.
  • Respond to routine and emergency reactive calls for repairs and service during regular hours, for the purpose of resolving immediate HVAC issues
  • Assist in and performs required duties of a water treatment program for a variety of hydronic systems. Duties include sampling, testing, documentation, ordering supplies and equipment.  
  • Maintain daily work order management system and asset management software (CityWorks). as it relates to HVAC equipment.
  • Conduct seasonal startup, transition, and shutdown of equipment. 
  • Diagnose cause of problems and/or failures in refrigeration and HVAC systems.
  • Test HVAC equipment to ensure safety and performance of HVAC and refrigeration units.
  • Diagnose/repair building control system, components, and affected equipment. 
  • Service and maintain a variety of gas-fired equipment (e.g. direct fired make up air, hydronic boilers, roof top units) 
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance/replacement with Facilities Management mechanical maintenance team
  • Assist in the commissioning of new, re-conditioned, or repaired equipment in existing and new facilities.
  • Consult with Project Delivery team to ensure that HVAC projects are designed and built for compatibility with existing building systems and controls.
  • Determine material cost, labor cost and if additional trade staff are required for equipment repairs or replacements.
  • Inform management about the viability of repairing existing systems or determining if replacement is necessary, and identifies appropriate replacement options.
  • Purchase materials as required and approved by HVAC team.
  • Facilitate and inspect installation/repairs performed by outside contractors for conformance to specifications and applicable codes
  • Assist in creating preventative maintenance and planned maintenance tasks with management team
  • Emergency work as required, on call duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a Province of Ontario Certificate of Qualification (The Apprenticeship and Tradesmen's Act) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic 313A
  • Must possess a valid TSSA Gas Technician 1 Certification.
  • Must possess O.D.P. (Ozone Depletion Prevention) card. 
  • Must possess a Glass "G" Driver's License in good standing.
  • Must be able to read mechanical blueprints and drawings.
  • Must be able to work with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts to accommodate work schedules or special projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have a customer service focused attitude.
  • Must have working knowledge and understanding of building, electrical, and plumbing codes.
  • Must have a working knowledge and a demonstrated understanding of CSA B149.1.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Onenote, Teams).
