Overview

This is a temporary full time position for approximately 12 months

The City of Kitchener is seeking a lawyer to join its team providing legal advice and services to Council and staff.  Reporting to and working closely with the Assistant City Solicitor (Development), the primary areas of responsibility will include preparation and review of a wide variety of development related and business type agreements, preparing and providing advice on a variety of by-laws; provide advice on dog designation matters and represent the City at Dog Designation Hearings; providing some prosecution support if needed; provide legal advice with respect to various divisions’ operations.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of a variety of agreements such as encroachments, crane swings, tiebacks, access
  • Prepare and review a variety of business agreements such as data sharing, parking, consulting, procuring grants
  • Prepare and provide advice regarding a variety of By-laws
  • Provide advice on dog designation matters and represent City at Dog Designation Hearings
  • Prepare and represent the City on uninsurable Ontario Superior Court of Justice matters
  • Provide backup assistance if needed with Prosecutions and Administrative Monetary Penalty System Settlement Hearings and Screenings
  • Provide legal advice with respect to a wide variety of operational issues and other duties as assigned

Education

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D)
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years related legal experience in municipal law or a related field
  • Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in the municipal sector, or comparable background and knowledge

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A person of integrity and sound judgment
  • Able to work effectively both in a team environment and independently, with proven ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, analytical and organizational skills combined with solid time management, computer and research abilities are required
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record
