Job Description: 

Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations (Sportsfields & Courts), the Assistant Supervisor position provides direct supervision of the planning, coordination and direction of the day-to-day work duties related to outdoor athletic facilities, hard surface courts and associated infrastructure. This position will also participate as a member of the supervisory team for the winter control maintenance program.

You may be required to work overtime, participate in an on-call rotation, and work shifts as needed from time to time.

Responsibilities

  • Assist supervisor with the supervision of full time, temporary labourer and student staff compliment on a year-round basis (summer and winter functions).
  • Assigns, prioritizes, monitors and evaluates work activities based on resource capacity and operational priority.
  • Coordinates work of external contractors performing work on sportsfield & outdoor court infrastructure and amenities and oversees quality of work, timelines and progress.
  • Applies technical knowledge related to turfgrass science to support maintenance and operation of outdoor athletic facilities.
  • Applies technical knowledge related to hard surface courts to support maintenance and operation of Kitchener’s outdoor court inventory.
  • Inspects for unsafe conditions, required maintenance and repairs of sportsfield & courts infrastructure and amenities (natural grass, artificial turf, hard surface outdoor courts and related sportsfield assets).
  • Implements and oversees the delivery of operational work as defined by their supervisor.
  • Assesses, evaluates and act upon complaints from the public, user groups and staff with direction from the Sportsfield Supervisor.
  • Assists when directed with development and maintenance of policy, safe operating procedures, fleet permit requirements, and other related administrative duties.
  • Partners with Human Resources to support Supervisor with performance management and recruitment of temporary labourers and students to achieve target staff resource needs.
  • Maintains and tracks accurate records of staff, equipment and material utilized in the performance of operational activities.
  • Monitors operating expenditures to ensure compliance with budget envelopes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • Minimum 2-year Diploma or 2 years in a specialized post-secondary program.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years related experience.

Skill Equivalency (if applicable)

  • Grade 12 Diploma plus up to 1 year of postsecondary courses with minimum 4 years’ related and relevant experience OR
  • 3-Year Degree/Diploma with minimum 1 year related and relevant experience.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid MTO DZ class driver's license in good standing. 
  • Provide Drivers Abstract at your own expense as a condition of employment. 
  • Valid Landscape Exterminator pesticide license.
  • Be flexible to work varying shifts, weekends and overtime as required in both the summer and winter.
