Job Description: 

Overview

Performs a broad range of building maintenance, preventative maintenance, minor renovations, and repair work to City facilities, including interior and exterior building components, finishes, fixtures, equipment, and related assets. Assesses work requirements, coordinates with staff, trades, contractors, and suppliers as needed, and completes duties in accordance with applicable safety practices, codes, procedures, and service standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance, general building repairs, and minor renovations to building interiors, exteriors, finishes, fixtures, doors, hardware, windows, roofing components, masonry, drywall repair, painting within City of Kitchener facilities.
  • Responds to urgent or emergency repair needs to make facilities safe, including damage related to vandalism, break-ins, leaks, doors, windows, and other building deficiencies.
  • Reviews work requests, assesses site conditions, determines materials, equipment, labour, and scope of work required, and completes or coordinates repairs as appropriate.
  • Coordinates with internal clients, occupants, contractors, suppliers, and trades to schedule, quote, support, and complete maintenance, repair, renovation, and installation work.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, blueprints, sketches, work orders, reports, and specifications to complete repairs, installations, renovations, and maintenance activities.
  • Completes required work orders, service reports, purchasing documentation, inventory records, expense tracking, and other related administrative records.
  • Performs work in accordance with applicable health and safety practices, codes, regulations, City procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and safe worksite setup practices.
  • Monitors building systems and facility conditions, identifies deficiencies or hazards, completes minor corrective work, and escalates specialized repairs as required.
  • Provides operational support for City facilities, including corporate storage, equipment/tool maintenance, special events, elections, team coverage, and on-call response as required.
  • Works independently to complete work assignments, determining work sequence within pre-established policies, procedures, duties, guidelines, and standards.
  • Assesses jobsites to identify cost, work, time, and quantity of materials required. 
  • Assists maintenance specialist staff (e.g., HVAC, Plumber, Electrician and Carpenters), as required. 
  • Operates skill saw, drills, and other power tools to perform maintenance activities. 
  • Operates scissor lift and uses ladders and erects scaffolding, as required. 
  • Drives vehicle to transport equipment, furniture, and supplies.
  • Purchases materials as required (up to $10,000). 
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid MTO “G” class driver’s license in good standing. 
  • Reside within 45 minutes of Kitchener Operations Facility for on-call purposes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable of building operations and maintenance with a basis understanding of the Building Code.
  • Able to choose appropriate type of primer, paint, and solvents to suit project, and prepare surfaces for painting. 
  • Able to read and follow written instructions, work orders, safety notices, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and instructions for using various tools, equipment, paints, and epoxy paints.
  • Able to read basic blueprints.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to perform drywall repairs, using appropriate materials and technique. 
  • Able to use and make adjustments to power tools such as power drill, hammer drill, sander, motorized tile cutter, skill saw, pneumatic nailer and compressor. 
  • Able to operate power-actuated device, scissor lifts, man lifts and use scaffolding as required.
  • Able to write detailed service reports and make suggestions regarding repairs for use by others. 
  • Able to make recommendations for building repairs using knowledge of existing solutions, through completing service reports. 
  • Able to identify if maintenance problems can be fixed by self, or if more specialized work is needed.
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization. 
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
